Is there a very tiny doctor in the house?!
We’ve got some very busy doctors, nurses and patients at Sandytots thanks to our lovely new hospital role-play area in the Pufferfish room!
From checking temperatures and bandaging poorly teddy bears to making sure their patients are feeling better, there’s plenty of important work happening in our little hospital.
But while the children are busy playing doctors, they’re also developing some really valuable skills.
Why Is Role Play So Important?
Have you ever watched your little one have a very serious conversation on a toy phone, cook you dinner in their pretend kitchen or tuck their teddy into bed?
That’s role play! And although it might look like they’re simply having fun, there’s so much learning happening along the way.
According to Twinkl:
‘Role-play games are important for your child’s development, as they help to build skills in communication, physical development and problem-solving’.
Here are just a few of the ways that Role Play can help your little one develop:Â
Communication and language: Playing doctors encourages children to ask questions, listen to one another and learn new words, from stethoscope to appointment.
Empathy and kindness: Looking after poorly patients helps children explore feelings, understand how others might be feeling and practise caring for someone else.
Confidence and social skills: Taking turns being doctors, nurses and patients encourages children to share, work together, solve problems and express their ideas.
Understanding the world: Visiting the doctor or hospital can sometimes feel a little scary. Exploring these experiences through play can help children become more familiar with what happens and feel more comfortable.
Encouraging Role Play at Home
The best thing about role play? You don’t need lots of fancy toys!
A few pots and pans can become a restaurant, an empty cardboard box can become a shop, and a teddy bear can make a very willing patient.
Let your little one take the lead, join in with their ideas and see where their imagination takes you. You might be surprised by the adventures you end up having!
Learning Through Play at Sandytots
At Sandytots, we love creating opportunities for children to explore the world through imaginative play.
Whether they’re cooking in our Home Corner, looking after their pets or running a very busy hospital in Pufferfish, they’re building important skills while doing what they do best – playing!
So, if your little one comes home wanting to check your temperature or give you a bandage, you know where they’ve been practising!
And if you need an appointment, we hear the Pufferfish hospital has some excellent little doctors on duty! 🩺💛
