We’ve put together our top tips for creating a smooth, stress-free morning routine for nursery drop-offs.
We all know that the way your morning begins can set the tone for the entire day. When you wake up late and find yourself rushing to get out the door, it often feels like you’re playing catch-up from the start. Add a little one into the mix, and the stress can quickly multiply as you juggle getting both yourself and your child ready for the day ahead.
That’s why we’ve put together our top tips for creating a smooth, stress-free morning routine for nursery drop-offs—so both you and your little one can start the day feeling calm, confident, and ready for whatever comes your way.
1. Have an early night
One of the best ways to prepare for a great morning is by getting a good night’s sleep. It’s recommended that adults have at least 8 hours of sleep a night. To learn about the ideal amount of sleep your little one needs, be sure to check out our blog here.

2. Prepare the night before
Try and do as much prep as you can the night before. Make sure all clothes are washed, ironed and laid out ready for your child in the morning. This can help you avoid the morning scramble looking for matching socks, the right shoes, or a forgotten raincoat, before heading to nursery.
3. Check the weather
This may not be an obvious one, but you’ll thank us later! Always check the weather forecast the night before. We do love extreme weather in the UK. There’s nothing worse than preparing clothes for a sunny day and waking up to heavy rain… it leads to scrambling for clothes, searching for wellies and throwing all of your well-intentioned planning out of the window!
4. Create a checklist
A checklist that your child can see and engage with will help you to avoid delays and distractions. Create a simple checklist using a whiteboard or even make one with your child together as a fun craft project.
Include things like:
- Wake up
- Morning Cuddles
- Bathroom routine
- Get dressed
- Eat breakfast
- Put on shoes and jacket
- Gather belongings
- Head out the door
Leave space for tick marks or stickers so ‘Getting ready’ becomes a fun game you can play together. This will give your child a sense of accomplishment (and you too!).

5. Wake up early
Giving yourself an extra 15 minutes in the morning before the routine kicks in will help you to gather your thoughts before your day starts. This time to sit by yourself and have a cup of tea or coffee will make all the difference.
6. Consistent wake-up times
Try to wake up at the same time every day—even on weekends if possible. (😅) This helps regulate your body clock and makes your alarm feel a little less jarring when it goes off.

7. Avoid distractions
Try to steer clear of screens first thing in the morning—it’s an easy way to throw off your whole routine. Instead, put on some upbeat music to get you in the zone. And hey, spontaneous dance parties? It happens.
8. Make adjustments
Every family’s different, so what works for one might not work for another. Your routine should be as unique as you are! Feel free to tweak the timings and activities as things change. And don’t stress if it doesn’t go perfectly every time—it’s all part of finding what works best for you.
Investing time in establishing your morning routine as a family will be so helpful for you all in the long run. You’ll start the day feeling refreshed, less stressed and you’ll ensure the day always gets off to a good start.
